CPAP AND APAP MACHINES

Continuous and Adjusting Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP / APAP) machines are used by patients who have sleep apnea. These machines deliver pressurised air through a hose to help relieve the obstruction that keeps the patient from breathing freely at night. These sleep apnea machines are mainly used to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is caused when a patient’s airways are partially or completely physically blocked.

Our Continuous and Adjusting Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP and APAP) are specifically designed to optimise patient comfort and compliance.

Healthysleep offers the following CPAP and APAP devices in and around Pretoria:

What is a CPAP machine?

A CPAP machine is composed of three parts: the airflow generator, hose and mask.

The airflow generator is contained within a small box with a fan. This fan draws the air from the room through an air filter and pressurises it. This air is then delivered to the patient through a hose. The hose can be up to 1.8m long which should give you full movement while you sleep. It is sometimes heated to prevent the condensation of air in the pipe. It is important that the CPAP mask which is used in the system is comfortable and well-fitted.

There are different types of masks for different types of facial landscapes and for how you sleep. In dry climates, a humidifier may be attached to the machine to prevent it from drying out your mouth.

How to set-up your CPAP machine?

First you will need to visit a sleep lab and be diagnosed with sleep apnea by an accredited sleep physician. The physician will then require you to spend one more night at the sleep lab to set-up the CPAP machine. During this process the sleep physician will check the air pressure which will best benefit your condition and they will make sure you have a good-fitting, and comfortable mask. After this you will take your machine home with you.

You can purchase your CPAP machine from Healthy Sleep based in Centurion, Pretoria.

DreamStar Duo and Duo ST

The patented advanced features (FlowSens, Specific calibration) allow the medical professional to ensure that the device is correctly synchronised to the patient’s needs (triggering of the inspiratory and expiratory cycles, leaks compensation) and adapted to the components of the pneumatic circuit (type of tubing, mask).

DreamStar Duo and DreamStar Duo ST work with OxyLink, which allows the clinician to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment by linking oximetry data to respiratory events and other data from the device. All of this data for the last 365 days can also be analysed using the DreamStar Analyse software.
